Making the move from a cot to a ‘big boy bed’ is a big deal when you’re 3 years old. When that bed has bunks and your big sister is suddenly sleeping above you, well, it’s enough to blow your tiny toddler mind.

I really struggled to find a bed within our budget that wasn’t hideous and/or poor quality. If money was no object I’d have ordered something from Aspace or Great Little Trading Co without a moment’s hesitation, but as frugality was the order of the day I had to be a little savvier in my selection. I finally came across this set of bunks from Argos. They’re not only nice to look at and really sturdy, but cost a mere £300 including the 2 mattresses.

We went for a ‘shorty’ which means the beds are satisfyingly teeny, but still big enough to see the children through the next few years. However, it’s worth noting this does mean all our bedding is slightly too big. Thankfully, the abundance of duvet only seems to make the beds cosier.

Izzy adores the gaggle of tissue paper decorations above her bed, and I enjoy preventing Jesse from demolishing and/or eating them. They’ll be fun while they last.

I have to admit, clambering into the bottom bunk each night to read Jesse his bedtime story makes me feel somewhat nostalgic for my own childhood. There’s something quite magical about having a little space all of ones own.
