Books are a big deal in our house. If I was pushed to choose the activity I enjoy sharing most with the children it would have to be reading – both with and to them.
At the beginning of the summer Izzy graduated from being read to by us at bedtime to reading alone.
I watch her each evening as she sprawls out on the sofa, lost in whatever paperback she’s currently reading, and feel both overwhelming pride and a deep sense of loss. I’m thrilled she’s caught the reading bug and has embarked on her own great literary adventure, but I also miss lying next to her, her head resting on my chest, as I read aloud. To think I used to moan about her picking The Gruffalo fifteen bedtimes in a row!
The move to ‘chapter books’ was largely fuelled by a passion for a certain bespectacled wizard. J.K Rowling is revered in our house, held up like some kind of bookish saint. Harry, Ron and Hermione were never part of my own childhood, but I can relate to the all consuming love Izzy exhibits for the series.
Sometimes at the weekend the house will fall quiet and I’ll realise she’s taken herself off upstairs to read. Three hours later she’ll emerge from the bedroom, bleary eyed as if drunk on soporific words, and regale me with a detailed description of the last six chapters.
The reading nook is still a work in progress. We’ve curtains to hang on the window to the right, and I’m certain I’ll add some artwork to this corner at some point too. I’m also tempted to create some more shelves to the left of the alcove as, no matter how hard I try, I simply cannot stop buying the children books. I feel a rug is also essential, but the right one is proving elusive.

I love the idea of a corner just for reading, its brilliant x
It’s such a lovely space, and the cushions are so comfy 🙂 xxx
The room is looking lovely. I have just redecorated our playroom in boring cream, but have now ordered some funky wallpaper (imo!) and intend to make a new Roman blind. It is really nice to create a lovely place for them plus I don’t feel so bad about nagging them to keep it tidy!
This si the wallpaper http://www.scion.uk.com/wallpaper/melinki-wallpapers/Strata/110223
The blind will be aqua or a purple chambray type material.
I am waiting to hear about the wall sticker things …
The reading corner is just amazing! I’m excited for the day when my daughter settles in to crack open a big chapter book too. I’ve been building a library for her since I was pregnant. Pretty much any time I’m in a used bookstore, I make a couple extra purchases for her. I love what you’ve done with this space. Your kids are very lucky!
Hello
Love the idea of having a book corner.
Completely unrelated question …could you please tell me where did you
purchase the little russian dome church that is sitting on your top shelf?
It is lovely !
x x
I’m afraid it was a gift from my Grandmother bought back from a trip to Russia. It’s actually a music box, the church rotates round on the base. It really is the sweetest thing. Sorry it’s so unobtainable!

Oh what a shame…my little girl would have loved it.
Treasure it…it really is lovely.

Thank you, we will 🙂 xxx
Love these colours together! I have possibly plagiarised your idea for my bedroom…..they do say imitation is the highest form of flattery. Or something. Ahem.
It looks great!
Haha! Thank you. Seeing as I probably stole inspiration from somewhere else on the internet I think I’ll have to let you have this one 😉
