I know, I know… you’re all Royal Wedding-ed out. I promise I’ll be brief.
Last Friday, like much of the world, I sat eagerly on the edge of my seat waiting to see THAT dress.
And my wasn’t it stunning!
But, I have a confession to make.
As the BBC cut to Miss Middleton (as she still was at that point) climbing into the rather swanky car that would transport her to her new life as a future queen of England, I was hit, albeit briefly, by a touch of the Bridezilla.
You see, in that instant I spotted the lace, the Grace Kelly influence and… yup, the similarities to my own wedding dress.
In a split second my dress, in all its lace trimmed glory, was rendered ‘Kate Middleton’ inspired.
OK. OK. Crazy bride talk, right?
So I put down my glass of Pimms and forced myself into a more rational frame of mind.
My dress looks nothing like the royal gown. Mine is slinkier, its sleeves are capped not long, the train is more modest (I don’t have the aisle of an abbey to navigate) and well, its just more me, I guess.
But I can’t deny I was a little miffed that Catherine had stolen my inspiration (because Grace Kelly belongs to me you see) and suddenly transformed my bridal attire into something much more ‘on trend’ than I’d ever intended it to be.
Bridal cat-fights aside, I did love the dress. The beauty of it was in the details, no?
I did feel the bouquet could have had a little more ooomph, it felt out of proportion with the dress somehow. It must have smelt spectacular though. Never mind what perfume the bride was wearing, the scent of lily of the valley is to die for. It would definitely have been a contender for our wedding if it was in season, particularly as it featured in my Great Grandmother’s bouquet way back in the 1930s {see my post herefor my family’s very own vintage weddings}.
Top-Bottom ~ The Queen Mother in her 1923 wedding dress, The Queen in 1947 and Princess Margaret in 1960.
TOTALLY hear you on this! Am going dress shopping on Saturday and almost feel like I need to actively avoid expressing any interest in anything lace trimmed for fear of looking like a bandwagon jumper….when in actual fact because I am so against completely strapless dresses I’ve been thinking about a high necked lace gown.
It did look stunning but definitely a bit of a Princess Grace rip off!
I actually wouldn’t mind something a bit more Pippa-esque actually – but again, don’t want to become a walking cliche and ask for anything pippa middleton inspired.
Haha! Your comment has made me think that my dress is almost a hybrid of the 2 dresses!! So it’s Kate/Pippa inspired. GREAT!!
I’m just hoping that by the time our big days roll around everyone will have moved on, maybe?!
Whatever you end up in you are going to look amaaaaaazing!

Completely agree with both you and Emma, and I don’t even think it is Bridezilla-ish (believe me, I’ve had my fair share of Bridezilla-isms from my SIL and this doesn’t even come close).
I want(ed?) lace on my dress and like Emma I want to avoid a strapless gown, or at least have a lace coat/shrug/bolero over the top so it didn’t look strapless. Damn you Catherine! Bitch.
Beautiful dresses and both girls looked absolutely stunning, but couldn’t she have chosen a popular strapless number instead? Tsk.

Princess Margaret looks stunning!
I’ve seen a picture of your dress and while it is lacy, it can not be compared to Kate’s dress. Don’t worry. You know you bought it first and that’s all the matters. Your wedding day will be winderful and that’s the most important thing xxx
I think Kate’s dress was absolutely stunning, as is yours! My mums wedding dress (from 1985) is pretty similar to Kates and when she stepped out of the car last week and the commentators were ooh-ing and aahh-ing over her dress, my mum was very smug and said ‘she copied my dress’ 🙂 I would take it as she copied you! You never know… Have to say you all have faboulous taste 🙂 xxx
Hi Kate…we know you’re reading, this was your wedding dress inspiration wasn’t it, you can admit it 😉
I can totally get why you’re (all) feeling like this, but you know what, as long as you’re happy in your dress, you’ll look sensational, and there won’t be any cries of “you ripped off Kate/Pippa” as you glide down the aisle.
Besides, if there are I’ll sort them out, deal 😉 xxx
Excellent post, summed up lots of my feelings too! In the run up to the wedding I was willing Kate’s dress to have sleeves, straps, SOMETHING to stop the ‘it must be strapless’ attitude of lots of the wedding mags. But when she emerged…yeah, definitely had a touch of the Bridezilla! Because of course long lace sleeves were my idea, hehe! Lets relax in the knowledge that our taste is classy, timeless and fit for a Princess 🙂 xx
sooo much to consider! you’ve reminded me that I’ve got my gran’s wedding dress stored away – I’m totally going to get it out and try it on. not sure my knockers will fit into it, but i’ll give it a good go. playing dress up is the best fun ever – i don’t think i’ll ever grow up 🙂
